Pourquoi ce titre ? Parce que cette histoire
comprend un début, mais pas de fin. Un début ? 
Il faut bien
que l’histoire commence. 
Pas de fin, car l’auteur veut que ce soit « toujours
», un film que l’on ne voit pas finir.

L’histoire est simple,
réaliste, un homme et une femme. Pendant tout le générique passe un film
amateur, en 16mm, émouvant car maladroit. L’image tressaute, on entend le bruit
du moteur. 
La dernière vue : la tête
d’une jeune fille en vert. 
Tout était en noir et blanc et gai et merveilleux,
puis vint la couleur. Mais la couleur disparut.&#38;nbsp;Le film, toujours tourné en
Scope couleur, ne montrera que des images noires et blanches – des vrais noirs
et de vrais blancs. La campagne n’a changé
que de saison. Un homme se promène, seul. Puis l’homme jettera son avion, si
possible un Stampe, sur le cœur même d’Angers la trop aimée. À mesure que la
caméra plonge vers la cité, celle-ci se transforme, devient un graphisme en
forme de rêve.Là commence le dessin animé, véritable univers de Larivière.

On se perd dans son
délire en même temps que dans le foisonnement de certaines images, le
dépouillement presque austère d’autres plans. Il y a du tragique et parfois du
cirque. 


Un contour vague, mou, se
traine par terre se répand en dégoulinant, mais progresse pourtant : c’est tout
ce qui reste de l’homme qui s’est tué. 


Il continue de vivre en petits morceaux. Sa
volonté a voulu se détruire, mais la mécanique marche toujours. Le rythme des
images devient égaré, les décors sont grandioses, à la Walt Disney, tandis que
la pauvre amibe vit son psychodrame. Elle devient pingouin (…), fleur,
papillon, monstre ou petit point. Elle s’assemble en une structure vague pour
constituer une forme qui s’anime : le visage de la femme perdue.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;


Avec Larivière, on passe toujours du rêve
au réel, comme si n’était dressée entre eux qu’une infime barrière que l’on
crève sans le sentir. La femme vit heureuse dans son château romantique, parmi
des voiles blancs et des tours de légende. Il faudrait parler encore (…) d’une
petite balle de golf, boule ronde portant le mot : 
« jamais ». Petite sphère
cheminant dans l’espace jusqu’à la ville mythique, se battant contre un
grouillement de matière, volant jusqu’à l’infini.

les restes d’un homme qui voulait mourir.

Une balle, une ville, un superman un peu
gauche, avec son costume d’astronaute rose-anglais et ses yeux immenses où
dansent de nouvelles visions, inquiètes, sadiques ou érotiques, comment cela
peut-il former un film ? On n’explique pas l’ensorcellement des images de
Larivière. Il ne faut surtout pas expliquer. Une chose pourtant doit être dite
: le film n’est pratiquement réalisé qu’à partir de six photos montrant le
ventre d’un appareil de télévision mis à nu. Fils, tubes, rouages infinis dans lesquels on se perd comme dans
la tête d’une femme, comme dans ses propres sentiments.

	Une boîte rose contient un chocolat glacé géant renfermant un flip-book, où l’on voit défiler un portrait en gros plan avec des changements de lumière.

Une cellule lit les différentes nuances de gris dans cette série de photos et les transforme en sons. 
C’est le déplacement 
de la lumière sur le visage 
et les nuances changeantes qui&#38;nbsp; permettent à la cellule de créer un son : le cri de l’ouvreuse.

« Le portrait de ma mère adoptive, Pâquerette, est à l’origine de la série Portrait(s). Marguerite Brochard, l’une de mes mères adoptives, que tout le monde appelait Pâquerette avait été religieuse, « petite sœur des pauvres ». Elle avait été obligée d’arrêter sa vocation, car trop fragile pour supporter la dureté de la vie au couvent. »

	Le panneau central de ce triptyque est une photographie noir et blanc réalisée à la chambre 4x5, un portrait de Marguerite le jour de ses 90 ans. Sa pose suggère une grande tendresse, mais aussi une omniprésence pesante. 


Les deux panneaux latéraux sont des dessins produits au crayon par l’artiste, à partir d’une photographie d’enfance. La ressemblance, à première vue, semble flagrante, pourtant il s’agit bien de deux dessins que l’artiste a travaillé de deux manières distinctes, l’un plus minutieusement que l’autre. 

Dans la finalité de l’œuvre, la double présence de l’artiste évoque la formation des idées.&#38;nbsp;La naissance de sa force créatrice, à travers les volutes de pensées sortant de sa tête, lui permet de définir son identitée.

Portrait d’un Polichinelle trouve son inspiration dans la maternité, dans la conception de la vie comme allégorie de la gestation des idées et de la création artistique.

	L’œuvre est un diptyque composée d'un grand tirage en noir et blanc montrant le ventre d’une femme enceinte. Un petit tiroir positionné sur le nombril invite le spectateur à l’ouvrir. De fait, une vidéo d'animation et stop-motion nous permet de découvrir les étapes de la gestation imaginées par Jean Larivière. L’artiste associe la réalité biologique d’un fœtus humain à la croissance d’un papillon, à l’aide de dessins et de papiers collés. Cette animation poétique donne naissance au Polichinelle.

Dans la deuxième partie du diptyque, on voit une photographie couleur d’un polichinelle français datant de 1870. Le jouet ancien montre les caractéristiques symboliques liées à ce personnage de la commedia dell'arte. En équilibre sur des roulettes lui permettant de danser, son costume est composé de lin blanc, symbole de lumière et de fertilité ; et de rouge, emblème du principe vital et de l’Éros. En dessous de sa large veste il cache une double bosse rappelant l’état de grossesse de la femme.


Par cette œuvre Jean Larivière questionne la symbolique entre procréation de la vie et création de l’œuvre d’art.&#38;nbsp;

	Dolls, Toys &#38;amp; Bébés de caractère : portraits des jouets, 2016-2018
	

Dans son œuvre Jean Larivière évoque l’attachement à la rêverie de l'âge innocent, par son regard onirique et poétique il nous délivre son rapport à l’enfance. À cet âge de tous les possibles, l'imaginaire du regard permet de franchir les frontières entre réel et fiction, en transposant la réalité dans une vision magique des choses.

Dans la première partie du XXe siècle, les jouets et les poupées étaient fabriqués avec un savoir-faire artisanal et une volonté de réalisme. Leurs peaux de porcelaine, les yeux brillants, les membres articulés, les détails et l'extrême attention portés aux vêtements, souvent taillés dans des tissus précieux étaient inspirés de la mode de l’époque.

Par la réalisation de ces portraits, l’artiste nous questionne sur l'ambiguïté de notre regard, sur le rapport entre l’inanimé et le vivant.

Les poupées rappellent celles du début du XXe siècle, ce portrait est une série composée de grands tirages photographiques réalisés à la chambre 8x10 inches. 

Les portraits alternent entre la couleur et le noir et blanc. Avec ces cinq poupées rangées dans leurs boîtes, l’artiste, lui-même grand collectionneur de jouets anciens, nous dévoile une prédilection pour la collection.

Le Portrait d’un jouet est un diptyque, composé de deux grandes photographies en noir et blanc réalisées à la chambre 8x10 inches.
 
À gauche, on voit une nature morte d'un jeu des grâces entrelacé avec un bilboquet, deux jouets anciens. La composition, épurée, nous révèle la grande beauté de ces jouets. À droite on voit une poupée Jumeaux dans sa boîte.

Au début du siècle dernier, toutes les poupées avaient le même visage : figé, poli, avec des yeux en sulfure cristal. 
La seule différence se faisait avec la bouche, fermée ou ouverte. 
Les fabricants proposent alors de nouveaux visages : un qui sourit, un qui pleure, un qui crie, un qui tire la langue… 
Les bébés dits de caractère.&#38;nbsp;
Les parents et les enfants pouvaient choisir des expressions différentes pour composer leur poupée. 


Pour réaliser le portrait de bébés de caractère, Jean Larivière a photographié, à la chambre 8X10 inches, deux poupées mises en scène dans une petite alcôve. Ce sont les deux panneaux latéraux de ce triptyque. Sur le panneau central a été photographiée une boîte où l’artiste propose de choisir une ou plusieurs expressions à mettre sur les poupées.

«  En 2017, je suis reparti à La Bourboule où j’ai enregistré les voix des enfants évoluant dans le même nuage que celui de mon enfance. L’avion me permettait dans mes rêves éveillés de le rejoindre, de le pénétrer et de survoler des paysages inexplorés. 
La fermeture et la réouverture de la boîte permettent aux sons de s’échapper et soulignent la vie intérieure de celle-ci. 
Elle nous fait ressentir tous ce qu’elle contient. »

La réalisation de ce portrait est le résultat d’une association de souvenirs. 
Une photographie d’enfance, prise au Parc Fenestre, dans la ville thermale 
de La Bourboule, 
où je tiens dans mes mains un petit avion fait en peuplier et de gazes recouverts de produits cellulosiques.&#38;nbsp;
Mon ami, lui, tient un bateau JEP ruban bleu numéro 1.

À La Bourboule, tôt le matin nous recevions des soins divers 
et variés : des bains, douches, humages, palette 
et tamis, toutes sortes 
de pulvérisations. Ces soins se terminaient par un voyage dans le grand nuage. Nous pénétrions dans une salle par un sas après avoir croisé moult chaises à porteurs blanches. Je croyais avoir aperçu des créatures étranges à travers 
le verre d’un petit œil de boeuf, 
que possédaient ces chaises à porteurs, traversé 
par un linteau en croisillon.

Le ruban bleu était décerné aux engins les plus rapides, aussi bien aux transatlantiques qu’aux locomotives, comme par exemple le paquebot Normandie, record entre Le Havre et New York, 
mais aussi la locomotive S2/6 
des chemins de fer royaux Bavarois, qui garda son ruban bleu pendant 29 ans, avec son record de 154km/h de moyenne.

L’image était encore présente au moment où, ayant traversé le sas, je rentrais dans le grand nuage. C’était doux, grand, moelleux. 
Je ne voyais plus mes pieds ni mes mains, je flottais, j’étais sûr de m’être envolé. 
Petit à petit je commençais à entrevoir des formes floues qui glissaient dans l’espace ; puis disparaissaient avant de réapparaitre. Je percevais des sons faibles, en y prêtant fort attentivement l’oreille, les sons devenaient des voix, puis un chant. Les voix des enfants remplissaient le nuage de leurs réflexions, de leur joie, et aussi de leur mélancolie.

Un petit chant s’approcha de moi puis s’éteint...


J’ai voulu que ce portrait soit protégé à l’intérieur d’une boîte recouverte de Formica, qui lui donne un air des années 1950. 


La boîte contient une reproduction exacte de mon avion de 1952, ainsi que des tirages représentants des nuages (pas une magnifique photographie de nuage, mais seulement des photographies de matière brute de nuage pouvant se rapprocher de celle du nuage fabriqué dans l’établissement thermal de mon enfance) prélevés dans les parcelles de nuages photographiés sur les flancs de l’Annapurna.

« Comme beaucoup de garçons j’étais
passionné par les avions. Bien plus tard, j’ai eu l’occasion de participer à un
meeting aérien en Angleterre, où j’ai eu la chance de monter à bord d’un Flying FortressB-17 - l’un des bombardiers de la United States Army Air Forces employé pendant la seconde guerre
mondiale -&#38;nbsp;et depuis la fenêtre du cockpit j’ai aperçu un autre bombardier :
celui-là anglais, un Avro Lancaster.

À partir d’un vécu d’enfance relatif au
bombardement de la ville d’Angers, pendant la seconde guerre
mondiale, Bomber commence avec l’observation au compte fil d’un négatif d’une
feuille trouvée dans le jardin de Jean Larivière. 


Le microcosme, qu’on observe
dans la matière photographique de cette feuille par agrandissement, ressemble
de manière étonnante à la vue qu’un aviateur a depuis son bombardier :

routes, champs, cours d’eau, agglomérations, forêts, même la lueur des
explosions des bombes… 


Bomber est une installation photographique
avec une dimension sonore. Le son des bombardiers en vol a été enregistré par l’artiste dans
un aéroport militaire en Angleterre.


Le spectateur est immergé dans la
reconstruction sonore des bruits des 126 Lancaster de l’escadrille qui avaient
bombardé la place d’Angers.

La harpe éolienne est un instrument à cordes joué par le vent, qui ne
nécessite pas d’intervention humaine. L’intensité des vibrations de l’air, la
forme et la structure de la harpe détermine les variations sonores émises par
l’instrument. 
De Rio de Janeiro à Valparaiso, en passant par le Cap Horn,
pendant cinq semaines à bord du porte-hélicoptère « la Jeanne
d’Arc », le Portrait du Vent a été réalisé par l’enregistrement de
soixante-deux vents différents.

Le Portrait du Vent est contenu dans une malle
interactive présentée à la verticale. Le couvercle de la malle est un écran
tactile sur lequel s’affiche une carte électronique retraçant « le voyage
de la chasse au vent ». 
En interagissant avec l’écran, le spectateur peut
se déplacer de point en point et écouter le son du vent correspondant à
l’endroit sélectionné. 

Dans le tiroir supérieur de la malle se trouve une
leaflet dessinée à la plume et au crayon décrivant l’aventure et l’anémomètre
Richard, l’instrument qui a mesuré la vitesse du vent.

Le son du vent par la harpe éolienne a été
capturé avec un Nagra à l’instant exact où il rentrait dans l’éprouvette en
verre. 
Bloquées avec un bouchon en liège, celles-ci renferment le vent prélevé
dans des endroits parmi les plus hostile de la Terre : des Quarantièmes
rugissants aux Cinquantièmes hurlants. 
Chaque prise sonore a été relevée à
l’aide d’un GPS, pour que l’artiste puisse reconstruire la carte de la route du
vent.
Sous ce leaflet, on trouve un tirage au platine pris au passage du Cap
Horn, et une loupe permet de faire un petit voyage dans le grain et la matière
du tirage. 
Dans le second tiroir se trouvent les soixante-deux tubes en verre
contenant le vent et des cartes annotées à la main. 
Un système sonore intégré
à la malle permet d’écouter « la symphonie du vent », composée par
l’ensemble des sons produits par les harpes éoliennes au contact du vent au
long du voyage.

C’est
la petite sœur du portrait du vent. 

Cette mallette
se nomme Horn, portrait d’un vent car elle ne contient qu’une éprouvette,
emplie d’un vent, et donc un seul son : celui du Cap Horn. On y
trouve aussi un leaflet dans lequel est dessinée la portée représentant ce
son. Puis 24
pages où sont imprimés les agrandissements de chaque note.


Sur la
dernière page l’on voit une carte précise du Cap Horn où a été enregistré ce
son. 

Puis
dissimulé sous le leaflet, vous découvrirez la photographie qui vient d’être
décrite sur le portrait du vent, mais cette fois-ci tirée à l’or. Une loupe de
poche permet de faire un dernier voyage dans la matière magnifique du tirage.


Grâce à
un flash code gravé sur du platine, vous pouvez entendre le son enregistré au
Cap Horn.

Marine est tout
simplement le portrait d’un marin.


On le voit là en
grande tenue d’hiver.Il a passé la vie de sa carrière sous le niveau
des mers.Bien sûr on pense
tout de suite au Capitaine Némo.Quand on le regarde
tout est beau : le regard, la décision inscrite sur son visage mais aussi
la sérénité, la maîtrise.


Le regard de celui
qui toute sa vie s’attend à recevoir
l’ordre d’appuyer sur le bouton rouge fatal.Sur ce portrait on
discerne très bien qu’il est à l’écoute du monde et surtout du monde sous-marin.Plus que le marin qui
parcourt les mers il est en communion parfaite avec l’intérieur même des mers
et des océans.


C’est pour cela que
pour concevoir ce portrait les sons de ce monde sortent de l’image : baleines, dauphins,
moteurs d’immenses navires, de bateaux rapides, de torpilles même de crevettes. 
Les détails des sons
produits par les mammifères, les détails des bruits d’engrenages.
Maintenant le
Commandant devenu Amiral 5 étoiles, se retire doucement du sable de la
plage mais par miracle son passage ne s’efface pas.
